You and Your Grandchildren

Reliving childhood through the eyes of grandchildren is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. There are many activities you can do with your grandchildren to get the most out of your time with them.

For ideas on how to spend meaningful time with your grandchildren, think about what you most enjoy doing that they’ll also enjoy, such as going to a museum, visiting the library, or cooking your favorite meal. Share your passion with them, so they can learn about something new, and you can pass your special knowledge and experience.

Then ask your grandchildren what their favorite activity is and let them teach you about it. This will create a memory for them that will last a lifetime.

Arts and crafts activities can be a lot of fun with your grandchildren. And when you’re around the creativity and energy of young people, you’ll go to interesting places in your mind. Finger painting, macaroni art, chalk on a sidewalk or driveway, coloring books, and Playdough are all great outlets for kids of any age. The older ones may participate begrudgingly at first, but their inner child will soon take over, and they will no doubt enjoy the creative expression.

Another way to spur your grandchildren’s creativity is to pull out some of the oldest items from your closet and play dress-up. Kids will love the opportunity to see some of the clothing you used to wear, and they may even take interest in the stories behind them.

If you live in a different city, county, or state, the next time your grandchildren visit, show them your city by taking them for a walk. It could give you a whole new perspective on your own neighborhood, such as noticing an interesting architectural feature on a neighbor’s house or a marking on the sidewalk you’ve walked over hundreds of times without appreciating it. What’s so special about children is how they open your eyes to seeing the mundane in a whole new light.

The most important thing you can do with your grandchildren is to simply spend time with them. Choose an activity you both can participate in, and use it as an opportunity to talk to and learn more about the interesting human being who wouldn’t be in this world if it weren’t for you.
