How to Turn an Interest into an Online Career

The internet has revolutionized the way the world runs, from manufacturing that utilizes designs created halfway around the world, to teams collaborating across borders, to some of the latest entertainment stars breaking out of obscurity by creating and sharing videos on websites like YouTube. This new economy isn’t just open to the younger generation. Many seniors are fueling their interests and finding new streams of revenue…all online.

Perhaps there’s a topic you’re passionate about. It could be as general as wildlife or as specific as Volkswagen automobiles. You can impart your expertise on your favorite subject with a blog, by sharing pictures, or writing articles. Reach out to other people who blog on your topic and join the community. These connections can help you branch out, help others, learn more, and thrive.

But don’t expect to buy a mansion and a Lamborghini on your blog earnings. Due to technical issues associated with running a website and competition among the millions of blogs in existence, this might not be your most lucrative option.

But don’t rule it out just yet. Blogging or just sharing stories is a great way to leave a legacy. Check out our forums to get the conversation going. You can even test the waters by posting a story. Give it a shot!

Writing isn’t your thing? There are other options. The internet offers great ways to share your favorite hobby and make some money in the process. Many artists and creative types sell their work on the internet. The lack of an in-store experience isn’t as much of a problem as it was in the days of catalogs because buyers can scroll through photos, watch videos, and even check out testimonials and reviews written by satisfied customers. Depending on what you create, there’s likely a home for it on the internet. Many artisans sell their wares on their own websites, Amazon, Etsy, and even on Facebook.

The key to turning an interest into a career is to keep creating, sharing, and doing what you love to do. As long as you’re having fun, it will never get old.
