Three Tips for a Healthier Diet

Eating a healthy and balanced diet can seem boring, but staying fit and healthy is too important to take lightly. Try these three tips for a healthier diet.

Eat Cleaner

As you get older, try to focus on nutrient-dense food. The best way is to eat a clean diet, which means whole foods and cutting out anything processed. When you check the nutrition label, if you see a bunch of ingredients you can’t pronounce, put it back on the shelf. There’s hidden sugar and salt in almost everything you eat, so pay attention to that as well. Remember: the cleaner you eat, the better you’ll feel.

Consider Your Cravings

Before bending to the will of your cravings, consider where it’s coming from. You might want a big juicy steak because you’re not getting enough iron in their diet. You might be craving ice cream because you need calcium. Try to find a replacement for the fattening cravings with something healthier. Fruit is excellent for when you have that sweet craving. Yes, it’s okay to indulge occasionally, but giving into every craving you have will not only raise the numbers on the scale, but your energy will decrease, and instead of going for a walk, you’ll be more prone to camp out on the couch instead.

Cook at Home

When you cook at home with fresh ingredients, you have the power over what you put into your food. At a restaurant, you might be lured by a dish that seems healthy, but it may be prepared in such a way that it sucks the nutrients right out, or what they use to make it taste so good might outweigh the nutritional benefit. If meal preparation is a chore for you, consider using a meal service that sends the ingredients to your door fully prepared. Cooking doesn’t have to be a burden. Invite your friends or loved ones to join the fun and try new recipes together.

Just making small changes to your diet could mean a world of difference and lead to bigger and bigger changes. A good idea is to connect with other seniors and find out how they’re upgrading their lifestyle to look and feel better than ever.
